There are handsome mah jongg sets, and then there are sets that make even seasoned collectors lean a little closer. This Royal Burgundy Dovetail is one of them.
Its lemon-yellow faces and deep burgundy backs are joined in true dovetail construction, creating a crisp ribbon of contrasting color around every tile. The technique takes its name from the tapered, interlocking joint resembling a dove’s tail. Early bone-and-bamboo tiles relied upon dovetail joinery for function. Here, Royal translated that old-world construction into Catalin largely for beauty, and did it exceptionally well.
Dovetail tiles were produced by other manufacturers, but Royal’s examples are particularly admired within the vintage dealer community for their precision and finish. Achieving clean, consistent joints in cast phenolic material required considerable skill. This was not an ordinary production shortcut. It was expensive, exacting work used to create a true luxury set.
Catalin itself was something special. Developed during the colorful plastics revolution of the 1920s, it offered brilliant, lustrous shades that traditional Bakelite could not. Unlike injection-molded plastics, Catalin was cast and slowly cured, producing the density, warmth, and polish collectors still prize today.
By the postwar years, however, Catalin was becoming increasingly uncommon in consumer goods. Phenolic resins had been redirected toward military needs during World War II, while Lucite, acrylic, and other newer plastics were reshaping American manufacturing. Royal’s use of two contrasting colors, joined tile by tile in the demanding dovetail style, makes this set especially remarkable.
The 152 original tiles include 16 flowers, a reminder that this set predates the joker’s full adoption into National Mah Jongg League play. Eight remain flowers, while eight have been designated as jokers with removable stickers made by the late CHarli, the well-known collector and beloved producer of vintage mah jongg tile stickers. This allows the collection to retain all of its original tiles while remaining ready for modern American Mah Jongg play.
The artwork is heat-stamped rather than carved. A heated die impressed each design into the Catalin, producing the smooth, remarkably uniform characters and motifs associated with sets of this period.

The tiles are in beautiful vintage condition overall. There are no cracks, warping, loose joints, damaged impressions, or significant paint loss. One Red Dragon has a small chip on its face. The chip does not reach the side or compromise the dovetail joint, and it has not interfered with play in our groups. It is fully disclosed and clearly shown in the photographs.
Because even a small difference can identify a tile during play, the listing photographs also show the chipped Red Dragon face down beside another tile. Its back does not reveal it within the wall or a player’s hand.
The rare Royal tweed case is in great vintage condition. Its edges show some wear, but the case remains handsome, structurally sound, and fully functional. The racks, Catalin “e” stoppers, and vintage dice are also in great vintage condition.
We do not have this set’s individual provenance, nor can we confirm whether every accessory began its life with these particular tiles. What we can say is that Royal dovetail construction is recognized and highly prized within the vintage dealer world, and examples of this quality are extraordinarily difficult to find.
Rich burgundy, sunny lemon yellow, a wonderful tweed case, and 152 original tiles joined with astonishing precision. It is rare, beautifully preserved, completely playable, and just whimsical enough to remind us that exceptional craftsmanship does not have to take itself too seriously.
NOTE: Vintage mah jongg sets were created for play, and a well-loved set will naturally carry patina, gentle wear, and small reminders of the people who gathered around it. We do not consider those signs of age to be imperfections. They are part of the set’s character and continuing story.
