Mah Jongg 101 – Learn to Play American Mah Jongg Mah Jongg 101 is a beginner class designed to give you a strong, confident start with National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) play. In this class, we walk through the fundamentals of the game step by step, from understanding the tiles and the NMJL card to learning the flow of play, including the Charleston, passing, and basic strategy. You’ll have the opportunity to build hands, ask questions, and begin playing in a supportive, guided environment. A central focus of this class is learning how to decode the NMJL card. We know this is often the biggest barrier to feeling confident at the table, so we spend time helping you understand how to read the card, interpret the patterns, and begin making informed decisions during play. Building this foundation is at the heart of our beginner instruction. We also take a multimodal approach to learning, combining dynamic screen visuals with hands-on practice at the table. This allows you to see the game, hear it explained, and experience it in real time, helping concepts click more quickly and naturally.
